Can Innovation Fight Hunger?
795 million people worldwide do not have enough food to lead a healthy and active life. Since 1990, the number of people suffering from hunger has been reduced by 290 million. But hunger still kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.Taking the challenge of eradicating hunger, the world´s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger and two social innovators founded "ShareTheMeal"; an app that draws on the idea that for each hungry child there are 20 smartphone users. With a couple of finger taps and swipes, it lets people donate 40 cents - enough to provide a meal for a child in Africa, to be distributed by the UN World Food Programme.In this Peace Innovation Lab we will start with a presentation from Sebastian Stricker, Co-founder of ShareTheMeal, to get inspired. Hereafter, we will work in groups to come up with other innovative ideas to tackle hunger, this old but persistent challenge of humanity.SPEAKER INTRODUCTION:It takes a special kind of person to be asked by the UN to develop an app to beat world hunger. That person is former management consultant and overseas development worker, Sebastian Stricker. Together with Bernhard Kowatsch, Sebastian developed the app ShareTheMeal.
