New Rules of Persuasion  The world of persuasion has changed rapidly over the past 10 years. If you haven’t noticed the shift, now is the time to recognize how technology opens doors across all sectors – to engage new customers, influence people’s attitudes, and, most interesting of all, change their behaviors.

Mass Interpersonal Persuasion In 2007 a new form of persuasion emerged: mass interpersonal persuasion (MIP). The advances in online social networks now allow individuals to change attitudes and behaviors on a mass scale. MIP has six components: persuasive experience, automated structure, social distribution, rapid cycle, huge social graph, and measured impact. Before the launch of Facebook Platform, these six components had never come together in one system. As tools for creating MIP become available to ordinary people, individuals and small groups can better reach and persuade masses. This new phenomenon will change the future of persuasion.

8 Steps for Creating Persuasive Tech This paper outlines eight steps to follow as best practices in the early stages of persuasive technology design. The eight-step process, drawn from demonstrated successes in industry practice, begins with defining the persuasion goal to match a target audience with an appropriate technology channel. Subsequent steps include imitating successful examples of persuasive design, performing rapid trials, measuring behavioral outcomes, and building on small successes.

Wired Magazine June 22, 2009: The Nike Experiment: How the Shoe Giant Unleashed the Power of Personal Metrics  Few things illustrate the power and promise of Living by Numbers quite as clearly as the Nike+ system. By combining a dead-simple way to amass data with tools to use and share it, Nike has attracted the largest community of runners ever assembled—more than 1.2 million runners who have collectively tracked more than 130 million miles and burned more than 13 billion calories.

With such a huge group, Nike is learning things we’ve never known before. In the winter, people in the US run more often than those in Europe and Africa, but for shorter distances. The average duration of a run worldwide is 35 minutes, and the most popular Nike+ Powersong, which runners can set to give them extra motivation, is “Pump It” by the Black Eyed Peas.

The Economist 1843 Magazine Oct/Nov 2016: The scientists who make apps addictive In 1930, a psychologist at Harvard University called B.F. Skinner made a box and placed a hungry rat inside it. The box had a lever on one side. As the rat moved about it would accidentally knock the lever and, when it did so, a food pellet would drop into the box. After a rat had been put in the box a few times, it learned to go straight to the lever and press it: the reward reinforced the behavior. Skinner proposed that the same principle applied to any “operant”, rat or man.

Everyone a Humanitarian, ep. 4: Marc Nelson How do you measure peace? Mark Nelson, co-director of Stanford’s Peace Innovation Lab, has created a quantifiable metric that focuses on peace as something beyond just the absence of violence. Former relief-worker, investment banker, and social entrepreneur, Mark Nelson founded and co-directs the Stanford Peace Innovation Lab, where he researches mass collaboration and mass interpersonal persuasion.

Let Them Talk: Peace Innovation The Lab’s approach to peace is rooted in the concept of captology and goes something like this: Positive behavior changes can be designed through persuasive interventions, and these interventions can be technology driven. In other words, machines can be designed to influence human beliefs and behaviors in a way that increases peace. Interventions that use persuasive tech can be carried out by a small group of peace entrepreneurs, galvanizing a crowd to change their behavior and work for peaceful outcomes.
